The Daily Wale Endorses The SPFA

We’re thrilled to announce the endorsement of the Daily Wale, a new student publication based out of Prince of Wales Secondary in Vancouver.

“The Daily Wale Magazine believes that the Student Press Freedom Act is necessary and essential legislation that provides young journalists in BC the rights they need to fully express their voices. The Daily Wale Team believes the SPFA has the full capacity to provide secondary students with access to accurate content and information while creating a community of young journalists who are protected, validated, and can report the news of their community without unjust interference”, the publication’s editors say.

A free student press is a forum for free expression, and a platform to enable the exercise of many other rights that form the basis of our democracy, including freedom of assembly and freedom of association. Securing the freedom of student media would secure students’ ability to participate in and affect public discourse, and contribute positively to the maintenance of a healthy democracy.

Like the Daily Wale said, the SPFA is essential legislation, and the SPFA Campaign will continue to push to bring it into provincial law.
